June Tip of the Month:

Q: How can I control the fly population at my house?

A: There are many products on the market now that claim they will stop the fly's life cycle short but it doesn't stop there. Not all fly control products are created equal with equal research behind it. The active ingredient in Solitude IGR, cyromazine, is a chitin (exoskeleton) growth inhibitor and since horses don't have an exoskeleton it doesn't affect them. Cyromazine has been studied in horses since 2001 and other species for much longer with no adverse effects. The active ingredient in Solitude IGR actually breaks down into nitrogen fertilizer once excreted by your horse. By feeding 1/2 ounce per head per day ($0.50) you'll greatly reduce your house and stable fly load. In addition to using a feed through fly control product be sure you dispose of old, wet hay, grain spillages, and manure frequently to aid in your fly control efforts. I personally use the product at my farm and have gotten compliments from vets and farriers who visit many farms a day asking what I do to control the flys; I tell them: "Solitude IGR!"
